• The role of Vowel Pitch Modifier in the formation of a Hmong word.
• The pitch of a sound is how high or low the sound is on a scale.
• Do Re Me Fa So La Ti musical scale vs Hmong Scale ppt.
• Vowels are therefore on the same pitch on this scale.
• Vowel Pitch Modifier tells you to bring the pitch of the original vowel to another pitch. These different pitch used in the Hmong language is designated by the letters b, m, j, v, s, and g.
  • Example: Use the word “Cat” at the differing pitches of b, m, j, v, s, and g.
  • Example (Hmong): Use the work “po” at the different pitches of b, m, j, v, s, and g.
    • Po becomes:
      • Po (spleen) + b = Pob (ball)
      • Po (spleen) + m = Pom (see)
      • Po (spleen) + j = Poj (female)
      • Po (spleen) + v = Pov (throw)
      • Po (spleen) + s = Pos (thorn)
      • Pg (spleen) + g = Pog (grandma)
